From the past to the present

The bridge grating, also known as the platform grating, the Mostostal grating or colloquially the “Wema grating”, has a long history that dates back to the industrial revolution in the 19th century.

Then, with the rapid growth of industry, there was a need to create durable structures capable of withstanding heavy loads and meeting strict safety standards. The first grating systems used heavy materials such as cast iron and carbon steel, which provided robustness but also generated problems of excessive weight and susceptibility to corrosion.

In the decades that followed, technological advances allowed significant modifications to be made. In the second half of the 20th century, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, developments in metalworking technology and the production of modern alloys allowed the use of lighter and more resistant materials such as aluminium and stainless steel. This period also saw the birth of the modular system, which became popular under the name “Wema”. This was a solution characterised not only by a significant reduction in weight, but also by higher structural strength and ease of assembly and disassembly. Modern grilles were distinguished by their excellent air and light permeability, which further enhanced the comfort of use and aesthetics of the buildings in which they were used.

The following years brought further improvements, with engineers focusing on increasing weather resistance through the use of special protective coatings and corrosion-resistant materials. At the same time, more ergonomic solutions were developed, improving the safety and comfort of the grating, both in industrial facilities and in public buildings. As a result, grating systems began to find a wide range of applications – from production halls and warehouses to modern infrastructure structures such as bridges, footbridges and viewing platforms.

The history of gratings is thus a story of continuous development and adaptation to changing technological requirements and safety standards. The evolution from the heavy cast-iron structures of the 19th century to today’s lightweight and highly functional systems, such as those referred to as “Wema gratings”, illustrates how technological advances have improved the efficiency, ergonomics and aesthetics of modern design solutions.
